Georgia, Georgian emigration, the Georgians of Turkey have suffered a great loss, the distinguished representative of the Georgian emigration, businessman, public figure, the great patriot of Georgia, the leader of the Georgian Catholic Church of Turkey, the creator of numerous kindness – Simon Zazadze passed away. Simon Zazadze was born in the family of Georgian Maecenas working in Turkey – Pavle Zazadze. Educated in Europe and the United States, Mr. Simon was the businessman of the world importance, who owned successful enterprises in different countries of the world. Apart from his main work, Mr. Simon financially supported the periodicals published abroad, the journals “Phirosmani” and “Chveneburebi” published in Turkey.
Simon Zazadze was the real patron of Georgian Catholic Church and monastery of Turkey, he was the leader of Georgian hearth in Istanbul for many years, by which he saved the most precious Georgian cultural heritage to us. His work was huge in saving the Georgian cloister in Istanbul and was guarding it until the death. The Vatican estimated the merit of Simon Zazadze accordingly and gave him the title of “Commendatore.” Simon Zazadze was watching the social processes of Georgia with the great interest. Due to the interest of Zazadze family “Ghia Guli” – the cardiology clinic in the K.Eristavi National Surgery Centre was opened, in Tbilisi.
In 2006, during his visit in the historical homeland, he was chosen as the honorary lecturer at Akhalstikhe University and the honorary citizen in the Akhalkhalaki region. He was the honorary citizen and the honorary lecturer in Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University; Batumi University and Kutaisi University.
Mr.Simon was saying “I am Georgian, I am for Georgia and I don’t know anything else.’’ Truly, his interest and endeavors were targeted at Georgia and the future generations of Georgia, being in his old ages he wanted to create basis and not to lose the access to the Georgian hearth, his unique archives and library.
I had the joy of personally knowing this great man, philanthropist, initiator of numerous kind business, the great supporter of Georgia. I express my deepest grief about the death of the great Georgian, my condolences to his family and the Georgians of Turkey.

Gela Dumbadze
The State Minister of Georgia for Diaspora Issues
