On October 7, in Stockholm, Sweden, the event dedicated to 850th jubilee of Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli was held. The event was held at the Stockholm Royal Palace, Armory museum; initiated and organized by the Young Ambassador of Georgia to Sweden – Natia Lortkhipanidze.
The aim of the project was to present Shota Rustaveli and his immortal poem “Vepkhistkhaosani” to the Swedish society and also to introduce Georgian culture, literature and national values accordingly.
Lyn Coffin- the translator of the latest English publication of “Vepkhistkhaosani,” American writer, poet, translator, the laureate of “Saba” award, was also invited to the event. After the opening speech of the young Ambassador- Natia Lortkhipanidze, Lyn Coffin, together with her Swedish partner, played the scene of the meeting between Avtandili and Asmati, in English in front of the society, creating an impression of the poem.
In the sign of the gratitude for interest in the Georgian culture and the English translation of “Vepkhistkhaosani”, Gela Dumbadze-the State Minister of Georgia for Diaspora Issues awarded Lyn Coffin with the “Certificate of Appreciation” and Georgian wine, which was specially sent for her.
The reception was held, after the end of the conference. The Georgian folkloric songs performed by Hamlet Gonashvili were played, the copies of miniature illustrations of 16th and 17th century “Vephkhistkhaosani” which are protected at the National Centre of Manuscript of Georgia, part of the UNESCO “Memory of the World”, were exhibited.
The English edition of the poem “Vepkhkistkhaosani” (“The Night in the Panther’s Skin”) caused the huge interest among the guests; deserves mention that the participants of the event received this edition of the book with the autograph of the author of translation herself- Lyn Coffin. Malkhaz Kakabadze- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Kingdom of Sweden; Adish Mamadov- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Sweden; Taras Budzinskyy- First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Kingdom of Sweden were attending the conference.
Among the guests were the representative of the accredited diplomatic corps in the Kingdom of Sweden; The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden; cultural, scientific and education organizations; publication houses. Lela Kukhianidze – the director of ensemble “Nergebi” and the founder of the Georgian community of Ilia Chavchavadze in Sweden, also attended the event.
The organizers of the event treated the guests with the Georgian wine. The participants of the event were given the opportunity to taste the Georgian cheese made by the old, traditional technology, which provoked a great interest in them.
